The horses of Locust Lane are at the very heart of the work we do.  Each horse on the farm plays an important role in our programs.

Some of our horses have been rescued from slaughter, some have been given to our care as the previous owners were no longer able to afford them, some have been sent to us for retirement and given a new purpose in life.

What does it cost to care for a horse in our herd? 
Yes, it is kind of like having a baby, as you don’t really know the expense until you have one.
 
For our herd, which primarily consists of older horses and ponies, some who are considered “easy-keepers” and others need some extra TLC, the average costs look like this:
 
$25 per week for grain and supplements
$35 per week for hay
$50 per farrier visit (critical to a horse’s health)
$100 for a dental visit (critical to a horse’s health)
$100 for yearly immunization
$200 and up for emergency veterinary care fund

To sponsor a specific horse, we’re happy to receive a donation in any amount. A sponsorship is a great idea to celebrate a special holiday, birthday or in memory of a good friend (human or equine). Sponsors can be individuals, families, school classes, or organizations.

With a commitment of $100 a month for three months or more, you may book a special session with an LLRC team leader and the horse you’ve sponsored to show them all the love. We’ll be sure to grab a photo of you together to capture your special experience.
